7 - Unfair Trades

As was mentioned in section one. Fair Trades should improve both teams somehow in some way. If it doesn't it should not be allowed to go through. There should be a review period and a message board or some type of communication to discuss trades and unfair trades. And a place for teams to discuss why they are making the trade.

Both owners should be able to explain and prove how this trade will benefit both teams before it should be approved, if any team thinks it is unfair. A trade that might seem unfair at first may actual be a more fairer trade then originally thought. For example if a team in a roto league needs tackles and is way ahead in rushing categories. That team may move some players that he has an abundance of to get the player he needs. Now to get a decent player that team should look for teams that have an abundance of the type of players they are looking for. This will help them to make a trade.

If not they may have to trade a bit more to get the player they need making a trade seem unfair or lopsided. Such as a 2 for 1 deal. The two players may seem a bit much if they are in the upper tier of your leagues rankings for the one player. But if the team trading the 2 players wins the league is it an unfair trade? Example a team trades some running backs Tiki Barber and Lamont Jordan for a linebacker Ware,Demarcus. That team eventually wins the league by taking the tackles category with 41 tackles in the last 5 weeks. So at first you can see how this trade may seem unfair to people. As 2 top players are being traded for 1 but it should be allowed if both teams can explain this. Remember!! Trades should benefit both teams. They DO NOT have to benefit other league members.

Another handy rule leagues can use for judging trades is the players being traded should never exceed more than double the player stats in a 2 for 1 deal. Teams will be hard pressed to explain this, but the above scenario does explain why this would happen and be a fair trade. Example: 2 players total for RBIs should not be more than double the RBIs of the 1 player. Again only use this where applicable as this will not work on all situations. This is more for the early stages on determining if trades are fair or not.

When trades are deemed unfair the next suggestion can be very helpful. Teams involved in the trade can use future draft picks (if possible) to even trades out and allow determined unfair trades to pass a league vote.

Trading players in keeper leagues where you have to judge players for future seasons throws another tough aspect into the trading mix. I believe all the previous tips should help in this area. Having a league vote is key. If there is league vote that vetoes a trade there is something wrong. Then teams can resubmit the trade and use the above suggestions to try and make it fair by explaining and proving why this is a good trade and by adding draft picks to make it more even.
