RB Values Next September?
Question from: Johnny (Bad Dog) M.
Question - I am in a 12-team auction league with a $100 salary cap.We can save an unlimited number of players at an additional $2.50 per player, per year from their base salary. I currently want to SAVE:
Reggie Bush-$14.00(base salary)
Laurence Maroney $11.50(base salary)
DeAngelo Williams $12.00(base salary)
Cedric Benson $10.00(base salary)
Our league can start 3 running backs. I am considering SAVING: Bush for 1 year @ $16.50, Maroney for 2-years @ $16.50 per year, Williams for 2-years @ $17.00 per year, and Benson for 1-year @ $12.50. Since good running backs are "money" in our league, I want to SAVE all 4 and trade or buy out 1 of them next August. I am a FF veteran, but I will gladly consider expert advice.
Can you give me an idea as to what these players relative value will be next September?
THANKS, Johnny(Bad Dog) M.

Answer - Here is a quick, early run-down of what I think each one of these RBs might do next season. Since it is so early, it is hard to justify anyone really knowing the exact values.
Reggie Bush: In leagues that give you bonus points for receptions, he is a high value. I would guess New Orleans is going to try and keep both Deuce McAllister and Bush happy next year, because it seems like the NFL is going to more two-back systems. Thus, the value of each will be hurt.
Bush: 900 yards rushing, 4 touchdowns; 750 yards receiving, 3 touchdowns.
Cedric Benson: This is the best of the four, in my opinion. The Bears are going to want someone that will grind it out, and Benson could take over for Thomas Jones, leaving Jones is a more formidable third-down back role. Benson is a workhorse, and I love his value in keeper leagues. Benson: 1,400 yards rushing, 12 touchdowns.
Laurence Maroney: Maroney is going to take over for Corey Dillon full-time here ASAP. Maroney, though, might get worn down, as he has never been the main back without someone by his side (see career at Minnesota for example). Maroney, though, is another hard-nosed runner with good speed.
Maroney: 1,300 yards rushing, 9 touchdowns; 450 yards receiving 1 touchdown.
DeAngelo Williams: The Carolina Panthers are never going to rely on one back. They kind of started the whole sharing the load thing, but because of injuries it never has really transpired. Still, Williams and DeShaun Foster could become quite the 1-2 punch in the coming years. Williams: 1,000 yards rushing, 5 touchdowns; 650 yards receiving, 3 touchdowns.

Answer - Well, unfortunately, I don't play in a league where you buy a players contract. BUT, with that being said, if you are a FF vet............why ask a question you already know the answer to? Benson maaaaaaaaybe on another team next year, the Bears aren't using him like they should, I wouldn't sign him to a contract, if anything, try to trade him for a more prolific RB, maybe some one like........Jones-Drew or Marion Barber???? Or maybe just free up some cap space to draft an up and coming RB. After all........you've been in FF for a while, let instinct guide you.
