Rank These Four SPs? - Originally received on 07/09/07
Question from: Jordan
Question - In a 20-team 5x5 league with 7 keepers, I've assembled this keeper core: Albert Pujols, Jose Reyes, Miguel Cabrera, Carl Crawford, Russell Martin, Jake Peavy, and Felix Hernandez (I've worked really hard, and have done well with timely buy-lows and sell-highs). I also have these players on my roster: Matt Holliday, Carlos Zambrano, and Francisco Liriano.
My target is 5 bats and 2 arms, with zero relievers as keepers (I just don't trust them enough, even though I have Saito and Hoffman), and I try to plan a core that will be competitive for 5+ years (so youth is a plus). I'm very happy with C/1B/SS/3B... which OF should I keep to balance my team the best, Holliday or Crawford? Also, looking to the long-term, how should I rank those 4 SPs? I am probably going to have to trade one of them away. I'm very high on Felix, and I like Liriano if he can stay healthy... but Peavy is flat out dominant and Zambrano is always a shiny spot on a roster. How should I rank those 4 SPs, 1-4?

Answer - You do have a solid team all around. As for Holiday or Crawford. I would keep them both and let Martin go. If you notice he just barely has over 300 ABs. And as you know there is alot of wear and tear on catchers and do play less games over the season. If I had to choose between them both. It would mostly depend on SBs and if you need them more or not. Then choose based on that, since there batting is comparably close. Except for HRs, which Holliday will produce more, which should also be considered.
Here is make rankings for the 4 pitchers you mentioned.
1 - Peavey (Under 3.00 ERA 3 out of the 4 last seasons)
2 - Félix Hernández (I have to rank him above Zambrano)
3 - Zambrano (ERA steadily declining over the last 4 seasons and aging)
4 - Francisco Liriano ( big injury if)
