Drafting Gordon #1?

     Question - I’m in a 6x6 (5x5 + OPS & Losses) 10 team keeper league (14 players kept). I won the league last year, and this year my keepers are: V. Martinez, Furcal, Dye, Beltran, Crawford, Carlos Lee, Morneau, Webb, Sheets, Felix, Bonderman, Haren, F. Rodriguez, Nathan.

     I have also traded for the 1st pick in the draft, and am planning on taking Alex Gordon. I have a hole open at 2B, and really want to pick up Howie Kendrick, but I do not get to pick again until the 12th pick (another part of a previous trade), but I do not think that Kendrick will still be available.

     These are the top players available in this years draft:
     Gordon
     Bailey
     Kendrick
     Dice-K
     Wood
     Cain
     Hermida
     Beckett
     Baldelli
     Lugo
     Glaus

     So, am I correct in drafting Gordon #1, or should I trade down and pick up Kendrick & another draft pick? Another question, would you have kept Howie Kendrick over Dan Haren if you were in my shoes?

     Answer - I would take Gordon at the #1 pick or even Dice-K. That is if all other top fantasy players are taken, which I am assuming. And the players you listed below are the best ones available.

     As for your 2nd pick to fill your need at 2B and if Kendrick is gone. A sleeper pick, if not taken is Pedroia projected to start at 2B. But, from the players you listed, I would take Dice-K 2nd. But, he has been going in the first round in our leagues. I have Hughes ranked higher than Bailey, but you can probably get them both a little latter in the draft. So, I would either go for Cain or Beckett who are ranked in the top 30 for our SPs . Then I would probably grab Lugo who is playing in Boston and Glaus lastly only because of a low ERA and tons of SOs. But, he should get over 80 Runs and RBIs if healthy.      To recap. Take either Gordon or Dice-K first. If you take Gordon and Dice is available at 2nd take him. If both are gone at the 2nd pick take Cain or Beckett. Then take Lugo to fill your 2nd Base need after. He should last a few rounds.

     As for Haren or Kendrick. I probably would have kept Haren over Kendrick. Only because I have watched Haren for a few seasons and have him on many of my fantasy teams. Kendrick is a great option also. And generally speaking most would say Kendrick.
