Invest My #1 Pick In?
Question from: Dennis

Question - Hey guys - I'm in a 14-team keeper league. We keep 7 and have an 18-rd. supplemental draft where I have overall picks #1, 15, 29, 43 for the first four rds, then it snakes after that. Here are my current seven keepers:

     Abreu, Bobby RF NYY
     Konerko, Paul 1B CHW
     Helton, Todd 1B COL
     Verlander, Justin SP DET
     Crede, Joe 3B CHW
     Ordonez, Magglio OF DET
     Sanchez, Anibal SP FLA

Here's my question: with the 98 best players already off the board as keepers, do you think it wise to invest my #1 pick in the new Japanese guy, Daisuke Matsuzaka, or should I go for the best hitter available, probably somebody like Jeff Francouer or Ryan Zimmerman?

Answer - Well, there is some age on your hitting keepers, I would take Francouer, he had a little bit of a sophomore slump last season, but, in alot of cases did prove that he can hit, not just for power, but he is a player who is capable of hitting for the cycle. I think that the braves made the right choice in keeping him up all season, so the upcoming year will be his second full season w/the braves, barring any setbacks of course. He would be my top choice if he is sitting there at 1......depending on what the players in your league having chosen to keep as far as pitching, I would doubt that owners would be willing to jump as quick on Dice-K, until he proves himself.......if he is still there w/your second round pick, take him next. Of course, that is unless you feel there is better talent still available after the first pick, take Francouer.

If I recall.......Zimmerman???? Rookie for the Nationals?????? Hitting in RFK.......for one more season at least........I would pass on him.........I always check and double check and double check again to make sure that there aren't any pitchers that are young and proven first before going for bats........good luck and I hope that helps. but Dice-K 1st? No way, I wouldn't waiste the pick on him.......he is unproven in MLB and especially in Fenway......and Im a huge Sox fan who lives in Boston.........and I still wouldn't pick him first.

Answer - The best strategy is to wait until you know who the top players left will be. There is often some player that slips through and falls into the lap of the #1 pick in these situations because some team might have 8 top players or miss one or drop them because they want to keep 4 young studs, etc.... This decision may end up being a moot point if someone better than all 3 of them falls into your lap.
