7 Keeper Player League?
Question from: Dennis B.
Question - HI guys, I'm a rookie owner (took over an abandoned team) in a 14-team, 5x5 keeper league. I have to choose 7 from these twelve to keep. In the upcoming 18-rd straight draft, I get the first pick in each of the first 4 rounds, then it serpentines after that. We can trade player and/or draft choices before the draft (trades must be even (player for player, or draft pick for draft pick). Help!!
Abreu, Bobby RF NYY
Konerko, Paul 1B CHW
Helton, Todd 1B COL
Kent, Jeff 2B LA
Johnson, Randy SP NYY
Sanchez, Anibal SP FLA
Beltre, Adrian 3B SEA
Crede, Joe 3B CHW
Shealy, Ryan 1B KC
Quentin, Carlos OF ARI
Liriano, Francisco SP MIN
Theriot, Ryan SS CHC

Answer - Well, this looks like a pretty solid team. Based on your league rules, here is my list of seven keepers I would keep. But, of course, I am sure you have some ideas, so take this (and the other answers) as help and not the book.
Bobby Abreu, Todd Helton, Paul Konerko, Francisco Liriano, Adrian Beltre and Jeff Kent for sure would be my keepers. Kent, yes, is old, but he is a pretty solid second baseman still, especially in fantasy formats.
As for the seventh guy, it is kind of a toss-up between Joe Crede and Carlos Quentin. I guess I would go by who you believe will be the best producer. Crede has a little more experiene, but I like Quentin.

Answer - Answer - You will need to rebuild. The draft will be a huge moment for you and I wish you the best of luck and skill. If the draft gods and your skill are both clicking, you can build a contenders very quickly, but regardless, I would suggest concentrating on young talent and settle in for the long run.
I would keep.
1) Anibel Sanchez.
2) Liriano
3) Randy Johnson
You need some pitching and your offensive options are not awe-insipring. My suggestion is to see if you can get some to take Randy Johnson, he is unlikely to be a huge factor but with name recognition and a killer lineup behind him, you might be able to get some younger players for your rebuilding process. Liriano is not going to help you in the short-term but he is a huge talent and I would store him on your roster where he could pay amazing dividends in the future.
4 & 5) Konerko and Helton
keep both of these as they are 2 of your better offensive players. I would look into the possibility of trading Helton if you can get someone to overpay based on his past and his name recognition. You would be left with Konerko as a very solid 1B player and maybe some young talent out of the trade.
6 & 7) Abreu and Beltre
Abreu is a solid player in several categories. Crede versus Beltre is a toss-up but I went with Beltre due to his better BA and the fact that crede does have some health issues that always worry me.
